UK E-Invoicing: What businesses need to know before the 2029 mandate

As we reported before, the UK is taking a major step toward digital business processes with the introduction of mandatory e-invoicing from April 2029 following on the government's confirmation in the 2025 Autumn Budget. This means that all VAT-related B2B and B2G invoices will need to be issued and received electronically using structured, machine-readable formats.

Unlike some European countries, the UK has chosen a decentralised Peppol-based model rather than a central government platform (although of ocurse this may change over the next 12 months) which means businesses will exchange invoices directly through certified service providers, helping maintain interoperability with trading partners across Europe and beyond.

The mandate will not initially include real-time reporting to HMRC which has helped to address some concerns around continuous tax reporting however, the government has indicated this could be considered in the future.

Importantly, traditional invoice formats such as PDFs, Word documents and scanned invoices will not qualify under the new rules which means that businesses will need to adopt structured electronic formats (with a possible standard being PINT UK, based on the existing PEPPOL BIS 3.0 framework already used by NHS suppliers). which may neccesiate work onlingside your ERP/Accounts providers to upgrade or adapt outputs to meet the standard.

Now, while 2029 may seem distant, we would encourage our client partners and indeed any organisation to begin planning now because early adoption can deliver benefits beyond compliance, including faster payments, streamlined processes resulting in fewer errors and reduced administration costs.

At Anota ,we are well-versed in implementing eInvoicing having done so for some of our Europen clients and, with DocuWare's eInvoicing connectors having been field tested in Europe, getting your organisation ready for 2029 whilst streamlining yoru AP and AR operations can be alot easier, less daunting and importantly, affordable.
